SVLT_ For many years, ADC has endeavored to provide high-quality, low-cost software. Among the vast array of software available for IBM and compatible computers, Shareware software has consistently been a leader in delivering true value to the consumer. Therefore, in addition to the software published and distributed by ADC, the SOFTWAREVAULT BBS has always offered the best selections from the Shareware available. Now, ADC has gone a step further to ensure that the consumer can obtain the greatest number of quality programs for the lowest cost, by publishing the SOFTWAREVAULT CD-ROM Library. Along with this new offering from ADC, the ADC BBS has changed its name to the SOFTWAREVAULT BBS to emphasize the enormous library of Shareware programs available over the telephone by modem. However, for those who want to acquire a very large library of programs quickly, the CD-ROM Library is the best and most cost- effective method. ADC has very carefully chosen programs from top authors to create one of the world's largest collections of Shareware and public-domain software. Shareware is a "try-before-you-buy" method of selling software. In the beginning, Shareware was purchased directly from the author. The authors were able to avoid the cost of marketing through normal retail channels and the consumer was able to obtain great bargains. One drawback, however, was the limited information available to the public about what software was available. Distributing Shareware software through computer bulletin boards was the very logical solution that soon became standard procedure for all Shareware authors. By allowing programs to be copied from bulletin boards and shared with few restrictions, Shareware is able to reach a much greater number of users. The SOFTWAREVAULT BBS is one of the better bulletin boards bringing shareware to the consumer. We maintain a good working relationship with the authors and afford them the chance to present their software in an electronic marketplace at a greatly reduced cost. The distribution of Shareware software by CD-ROM is the next logical progression. It is like downloading thousands of programs from the BBS at once. The same Shareware rules and requirements apply, of course, but you receive so many programs at one time that you can instantly build an impressive software library. ADC pays a great deal of attention to all of the software it distributes. All programs uploaded to our BBS are carefully tested and reviewed to ensure performance and to detect the presence of a virus. The software is copied to high quality streaming tapes and our CD-ROM discs are produced using state-of-the-art technology. And, of course, our technical staff is available to help with any questions you might have. From our beginning, ADC has recognized that the consumer is the very most important link in the chain of successful distribution. The success of ADC in distributing all of the software it carries has depended upon listening to, and understanding, the needs of our clients, and providing solutions when they are needed. The same is true for our CD-ROM Library. We want to hear from you and learn what can be improved in the future. Feel free to use all of the means of communicating with us for this purpose, including leaving messages for us on our BBS. The Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP), is an organization formed to strengthen the future of shareware. Its members, all of whom are programmers that subscribe to a code of ethics, are committed to the concept of shareware as a method of marketing. The ASP sets standards for its members and their shareware products which provide (among other things) that programs produced by ASP members must be fully documented, non-crippled, and offered with at least a minimum level of support. It also sets the standards for share ware disk vendors and provides information to the public about shareware. Shareware software is a unique marketing approach which allows consumers to purchase software directly from the author. This eliminates costly marketing, promotion, and packaging; allowing consumers to obtain quality software at a fraction of the commercial cost. Shareware authors allow their programs to be copied and distributed with few restrictions. Shareware users are encouraged to examine a program, copy it, and pass it on to friends. If users find the software program useful, they are asked to register with the software author. This usually means paying a registration fee directly to the shareware author. In return for this registration fee, "registered users" receive the right to continue to use the software and added benefits such as full documentation, technical support, and future updates of the program. Registration is the key to success for the shareware concept. If you try a program and it does not meet your needs, you are not expected to register. However, if you try a program, like it, and continue to use it, you should compensate the author with a registration fee. Registration also insures further development of the program. Shareware is the "try-before-you-buy" method of software distribution that will literally save you hundreds of dollars on software purchases. American Databankers Corporation, distributor of The SoftwareVault, is an approved vendor and associate member of the Association of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members' products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon MI 49422-9427 or send a CompuServe Mail message to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536 or FAX 616-788-2765. ******************************************************************* COPYRIGHT NOTICE: 1. These authors work many long hours to produce and test these programs that are on the SoftwareVAULT CD-ROM. They have earned the right to be paid for their efforts by the sweat of their brow. The registration price for a shareware is usually very small ($5.00 - $85.00 US). Registering a program brings with it additional benefits. In most cases, you will get the latest version of the program and a printed manual. Most shareware programs are constantly being improved so when you register, there is a good chance that you will get a newer version the one you are registering for. You will also be eligible for technical support (usually by phone, letter or CompuServe). The registered version will also be free of any trailers or opening (nag) screens on it, telling you to register. If you register a program from outside of the USA, you should mail the author a US-draft or a bank check in US-Dollars. If the author accepts Visa or Mastercard, you can simply give your Visa / Mastercard number and expiration date. The usual period of time for evaluation of a program before registering is about 30 days. ******************************************************************* Limited Warranty and Disclaimer American Databankers Corporation warrants that its CD-ROM disk media are free from defects for 90 days and will replace any defective media within that time period upon receipt of such defective media, postage prepaid. Millions of computer users and over 16,000 corporations have made the McAfee anti-viral utilities their choice for virus protection. ViruScan's advanced detection technology, including pattern-matching, algorithmic scanning, and validation code checking, can find even the most challenging mutating and encrypting (polymorphic) viruses. It consistently finds known and unknown viruses and their variants, without the "false-alarms" that have become commonplace with some less-sophisticated virus checkers. In the Virus Detection and Protection Category on this CD-ROM, you will find the complete suite of McAfee anti-virus products; ViruScan, the virus detector you run from the command-line; Clean-Up, the virus remover and disinfector; VShield, the Terminate-And-Stay-Resident (TSR) infection preventer; NetShield, the Netware-Loadable-Module (NLM) version of ViruScan. We design, publish and directly support a line of proprietary software in several categories. Our software products range from a menu and utilities package specifically created for the novice to average user to very sophisticated industrial products created for use by other programmers to solve specific problems. We design and write utilities, installation programs and multilingual procedures for publishers of software in the United States and in several foreign countries. We also manufacture and distribute The SOFTWAREVAULT collection of CD-ROM Software. Our collection of CD-ROM Software is unique because of the very large number of programs, serveral thousands, and because no program is duplicated in more than one collection of programs. In addition, we provide you with a free copy of The Librarian, a complete database of all of the files on the CD. You may search on any subject and when you select a program, the Librarian will create the necessary directories (if you ask it to), copy the program from the CD-ROM and unpack the programs and files for you. The Librarian can also create directory listing text files for any BBS, or export information to a file in any one of several different word processing formats, and filter or search by any subject. The Collection - hundreds of megabytes of fantastic shareware programs. Many of which are better than commercial programs. The single most significant distinguishing feature of American Databankers is the depth of knowledge we maintain for all of the software we carry. When you telephone our technical support staff, you speak with an experienced programmer who is familiar not only with our products, but also with all facets of the complex problems which beset the industry. We stand behind every program we carry and we value every one of our customers. We provide genuine help when you need it and we offer the same high quality of service to end-users, dealers, programmers, distributors and OEMs. We maintain a 24-hour Bulletin Board with separate conferences for each of our products. It offers you great power while working at the DOS prompt and in batch files, makes minimal use of your precious memory, and generally makes life with DOS a whole lot easier. It works with all versions of MS-DOS/PC-DOS from 2.0 up, and with DR-DOS. When you purchase 4DOS you'll receive the current version on 5.25" or 3.5" disk, a typeset-quality printed and bound manual, and an upgrade to the next major release. Included in this package is BOOT.SYS. A shareware package which allows you to choose your system configuration when your computer boots. It makes managing a variety of configurations (for example, booting under plain 4DOS, DESQView, or Windows 3), very simple. It supports multi-level menus, color display, and option selection in both CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT. It is invoked when the system boots, and does not require a reboot after changing configura- tions the way some similar programs do. To use BOOT.SYS effectively you need to be reasonably familiar with CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. BOOT.SYS works with multiple sets of configuration directives (DEVICE, SHELL, etc.) in your CONFIG.SYS file. It presents menus allowing you to pick which set or subset of these directives to execute, and also provides a program you can run in AUTOEXEC to determine which menu choice was selected. You use the result returned by this program in IF or IFF statements in AUTOEXEC.BAT in order to make AUTOEXEC execute the correct TSRs and other commands corresponding to the choices you made in CONFIG.SYS. This approach is very powerful when combined with 4DOS IFF / THEN / ELSE statements. ***** Unzip or Copy 4DOS4.ZIP from the "HOTTEST HITS" Group or Area ******************************************************************* >>> QUIKMENU (TM) - Version 1.07a <<< QuikMenu is a graphical menu system that allows you to use your computer more quickly, easily and more intuitively. It starts off giving you a directory tree where you can add, delete, move, hide and unhide and rename directories as well as change drives, search for files and print a copy of the tree. Highlighting any directory in DL and pressing "Enter" will show you a sorted list of the files in that directory. You can edit, view, copy, rename, print, and resort any single file or group of marked files. You can also run any program or batch file. DB.EXE is the file list portion of DL.EXE. You can use DB when you want to work in a specific directory and have no need for and don't want to wait for a directory tree. Most of the time, I use DB instead of typing DIR, to see what's in a directory and to be able to scroll through it and view files. DA.EXE is like DB but shows you all the files on a particular drive. For example, typing "DA" and pressing "Enter" on your C drive will show you all the files in every directory on your drive C. You can also add additional drives to the file view. DM.EXE is a full featured hard disk menu. You can add up to 20 entries to the main menu and have unlimited sub menus of up to 20 entries each. DM can be run from the command line or also popped up in DL or DB by pressing the slash, "/", key. When running DM from DL or DB, you can run programs and add the highlighted or marked files from DL and DB to the command line. In this manner you can add your favorite archive utility to DM, mark a group of files in DL or DB, and them pop up DM and run your archive program and add the marked files to the command line. Hard Disk Director will run on all IBM compatible PCs running DOS 2.0 or later. This version has been made compatible with many network drives. However Hard Disk Director does no file sharing or locking and is not aware of other users on a network, so you will have to determine its suitability for your network. It can handle paths of up to nine directories deep. The memory DA requires depends on the amount of files on the drive that it is reading. A minimum of 300 kilobytes is recommended for a 20 megabyte drive. ***** Unzip or Copy HDDIR.ZIP from the "HOTTEST HITS" Group or Area ******************************************************************* >>> ASEASY SPREADSHEET <<< AS-EASY-AS is an award winning spreadsheet from Trius, Inc. Convert between any two formats (with a few restrictions). Print them to any LaserJet Plus compatible or PostScript laser and many dot matrix printers. Dither the Color ones to black and white. Reverse the monochrome ones black for white. Rotate and flip them. Scale them Reduce the number of Colors in them and do Color dithering. Sharpen, soften and otherwise wreak special effects on them. Crop them down to smaller files Adjust the brightness and Color balance of the Colored files. Capture Windows screens or portions thereof. Using Graphic Workshop, you can have your image files in the formats that your software wants to use them in, all without keeping track of numerous utilities. In addition, using the halftoning and dithering facilities of Graphic Workshop, you can convert full Color digitized photographs... most notably GIF files... for use as really excellent black and white clip art, suitable for inclusion in your documents. Graphic Workshop will handle image files of any size. It will use extended or expanded memory if you have some, and disk space if you don't. It has a fast and easily understood user interface. Hopefully, it lacks even the merest vestiges of bugs... a likely story, but we hope so. Graphic Workshop will drive your monitor and print through the Windows hardware drivers. If you have screen and printer drivers for Windows, you have them for Graphic Workshop for Windows. Graphic Workshop will run on any system which is capable of running Windows 3.0 or better. Its ability to deal with large files is limited by the amount of free memory in your system. Note that unlike the DOS version of Graphic Workshop, Graphic Workshop for Windows cannot use virtual memory. ***** Unzip or Copy GWS4WIN.ZIP from the "HOTTEST HITS" Group or Area ******************************************************************* >>> 4PRINT PRINTED PAGE FORMATTER <<< 4Print version 4.1 is a paper-saving utility for HP LaserJets, DeskJets and compatible. 4Print prints two or three fully readable pages of text sideways across the page, and by printing on both sides, it can yield four, six, or even more pages of text on each sheet! 4Print allows programmers to view four pages of source code at a time, writers to read four pages of text, and spreadsheet and database users to print wide reports all the way across the page. 4Print's reduced paper consumption means lower paper costs and less shelf space taken up for storing printouts, and it's also good for the ecology! To help you find your way through this sea of software, we have included the SoftwareVAULT Librarian program. The SoftwareVAULT Librarian is a program that: (1) Lets you sort through the thousands of programs and resources the SoftwareVAULT collections. (2) Helps you find programs that interest you. (3) Helps you to transfer these files and programs to your hard drive so that you can use them. Please note that to use SoftwareVAULT files you MUST transfer them to your hard drive! The files on the CD are compressed and must be "UNZIPPED" to your hard drive so they can be accessed. (Don't worry, the Librarian does this automatically for you. We "ZIP" our files up so that we can include more software on each SoftwareVAULT collection, giving you more value for your dollar.) TUTORIAL: HOW TO USE THE FILES ON THIS DISC You can use any of the thousands of programs and resources on a SoftwareVAULT Collection with just a few easy steps... Step 1: Use one of the "GROUP" buttons to narrow your search to a specific group of areas, press the button that you are most interested in and you will be presented with a list of "AREAS". These "AREAS" are a special collection of files covering a specific subject. Select the "AREA" that interestes you most and press the "ENTER" key. This will give you a long list of files, each followed by a one sentence description of what that file does. Once you find one that looks interesting, you will have several options. Step 2: a. Press "ENTER" to examine the contents of the "ZIP" file of view the "GIF" file (picture). b. Press the "F6" function key to view a long description of the file. Not all files have a long description, so don't be surprised if it's the same as the one-sentence description. c. Press the "F10" function key to copy the file or unzip the file to your hard drive. Unless you're a veteran SoftwareVAULT user, "examine the file contents" and "copying the file to your hard disk" might be confusing. THE OPTION YOU ALMOST ALWAYS NEED TO SELECT IS "UNZIP TO HARD DRIVE". Selecting "Unzip to hard drive" will decompress the file and will transfer it to your computer. Step 3: Select the drive and name a directory in which to put your file. Once you've chosen to unzip the file to your hard disk, a directory selection menu will appear on your screen. Choose the directory you would like to hold the file. IT'S USUALLY A GOOD IDEA TO CREATE A NEW DIRECTORY FOR A ZIP FILE. Don't worry. The SoftwareVAULT Librarian can do this automatically. Simply make up a new directory name and type it in the directory box. The Librarian will ask you if you want to "create the directory", and when it does, answer "Yes". Step 4: Use your file. Exit the Librarian and go to the directory you created to hold your file. You will discover that your one ZIP file has probably decompressed into a collection of smaller files. To start the program, look for the file with an ".EXE" on the end of it's name. This is the main executable for the program. Running it should start the program! Executable files may also have a ".COM" extension or a ".BAT" extension. HELP WITH MENU ITEMS 1) FILE 1. a) Change CD-ROM Select "Change CD-ROM" to use other SoftwareVAULT Collections. When you select "Change CD-ROM" be sure to place disc you would like to use in your CD-ROM drive. Also, make sure that the correct data path and drive have been specified. If you are running directly from the CD-ROM, this option will be disabled. 1. b) Exit Select "Exit" to exit the SoftwareVAULT Librarian. 1. c) Export Files Listing Saves a partial or complete list of the files with their one line descriptions to a variety of file formats.
